Figma adds generative design plugins and a new variable grid system

The new generative plugins let designers create layout variations, icon sets, and microcopy inside Figma using embedded models. Designers can seed parameters — tone, complexity, or accessibility level — and Figma generates multiple options that can be quickly iterated on. Generated assets include annotations about accessibility and export-ready variants.

Figma's variable grid system introduces responsive constraints that change grid density, column widths, and spacing rules based on defined breakpoints and content importance. Unlike static responsive grids, this system permits rule-based scaling so designers specify intent rather than pixel-perfect values.

Teams responded positively: product designers appreciate fewer manual breakpoint adjustments, while developers will get clearer layout intent through improved code export hints. Figma said plugin outputs respect design tokens and can be versioned in team libraries to maintain consistency.
