Figma adds Inclusive Variants and automated contrast linting to core design system features

Figma's update centers on Inclusive Variants, a variant management system that lets teams define accessibility-focused states (e.g., high-contrast, reduced-motion, dyslexic-friendly) as first-class variants in component sets. Designers can now toggle these states during prototyping to validate layout stability and interactions under different accessibility needs.

The new automated contrast linter runs in the design canvas and flags token combinations that fail WCAG contrast metrics while suggesting accessible alternatives that preserve brand intent. Linter rules can be configured at the organization level and synced to component libraries, ensuring consistent enforcement across projects.

Figma also expanded token metadata to include accessibility annotations—semantic intent, recommended keyboard behavior, and fallback strategies—that plugin developers and build pipelines can consume. Early adopters report reduced handoffs and fewer accessibility regressions when integrating the features into their design-system workflows.
