Figma introduces SmartFrames: generative layout and responsive rules in canvas
Design · 3 min read
Figma released SmartFrames, a major canvas feature that combines generative AI with constraint-based layout rules. SmartFrames can generate multiple responsive layout variants from a single design seed, infer padding and spacing standards, and create layout presets that remain editable across breakpoints.
The feature surfaces an intent bar where designers can specify high-level goals — like “mobile-first” or “data-dense table” — and the engine proposes frame structures, component placements and responsive behavior. SmartFrames outputs are fully editable and preserve original layers so teams can refine generated layouts without losing control.
Figma also added a new plugin API for SmartFrames that allows third-party component libraries to register adaptation rules. This means design systems can define how components respond inside SmartFrames, reducing friction when converting designs to engineering-ready specs.
