Figma launches Smart Layouts: AI-driven responsive components that adapt across breakpoints

Smart Layouts extends Figma's Auto Layout with an AI assistant that suggests resizing rules, priority of elements, and grid adaptations based on real-world usage patterns. Designers can accept suggested constraints or edit them; the system generates both frame-level constraints and component variants for different device classes.

The underlying engine analyzes existing design system patterns in a team file, learns constraint intent (e.g., whether buttons should always crop or wrap), and creates a small behavioral model attached to the component. When content changes or a new breakpoint is added, Figma auto-generates variants or migration suggestions, preserving spacing and alignment standards.

Figma also released API endpoints so design systems managers can run batch adjustments and export a manifest of token changes. The company noted that Smart Layouts are opt-in and can be toggled per team to avoid unexpected mass edits in large libraries.
