Figma rolls out AutoLayout 3.0 with on-device generative layout engine

Figma announced AutoLayout 3.0, a major update to its responsive layout system that embeds a compact generative model inside the desktop app. Unlike previous cloud-first AI features, the new engine runs on-device for layout suggestions, enabling instant recommendations without round-trip latency or internet dependency for basic flows.
AutoLayout 3.0 analyzes frame hierarchy, component constraints, and content semantics to suggest alternate responsive configurations and spacing systems. It offers one-click transforms to shift between grid-heavy, flex-first, and content-first layouts, and it can automatically generate variants for mobile, tablet, and desktop breakpoints.
The update also introduces a ‘Design Intent’ control panel where designers can set constraints like accessibility contrast, density, and brand spacing tokens; the engine then prioritizes suggestions accordingly. Figma says the on-device approach reduces exposure of proprietary designs while still allowing enhanced cloud services for collaborative multi-user suggestions.
