Flowtype raises $15M to expand variable typography platform for web and apps

Flowtype released a platform that lets teams author dynamic typography systems using variable fonts and run-time orchestration. Designers can define rules—optical size vs viewport width, weight vs reading mode—and Flowtype compiles those rules into lightweight runtime CSS and JS.

The startup raised $15 million led by Orchid Ventures to invest in font partnerships, a visual rule editor, and integrations with popular CMS and design systems. Flowtype argues that responsive typography has been an overlooked piece of design systems that creates UI inconsistencies across devices.

Early customers include publishing platforms and e-commerce sites that reported improved readability metrics and faster A/B testing thanks to Flowtype's dynamic controls. The company plans a free tier and premium enterprise features for brand governance.
