Frameless design tooling: a new open-source format for model-to-design interoperability
Tech · 5 min read
Today a group of design tool vendors and model platforms launched Frameless, an open-source interchange format for design tokens, component metadata, and provenance. Frameless is intended to make it easier for AI models and design tools to exchange structured design artifacts reliably.
The format supports token versioning, component constraints, and metadata that captures model provenance and transform steps. Tool vendors already confirmed early integrations, promising more robust round-trip workflows where models output artifacts that import cleanly into editors.
The consortium emphasized governance and extensibility, encouraging contributors to propose schema extensions for accessibility, localization, and motion. Frameless aims to reduce repeated engineering between tools and to make generative outputs more predictable for production workflows.
