Freelance marketplaces compress mid-level design rates as competition rises
Design · 4 min read
Marketplaces saw record growth of design listings as contractors supplemented layoffs or shifted to full-time freelance work. Increased supply, plus AI-assisted quick-turn tools, has reduced hourly rates for generic UX and visual design gigs, particularly for mid-level contributors.
However, freelancers who niche—design systems, advanced prototyping, accessibility audits, or AI UX—maintain higher rates. Marketplaces are adapting by offering certification, curated talent pools, and business services that differentiate premium freelancers.
Designers relying on contracting should consider packaging outcomes rather than hours, building retainer relationships, and highlighting domain expertise. Agencies and enterprises are also starting to favor longer-term vendor relationships over ad-hoc marketplace hires.
