From Cluttered to Calm: A SaaS Dashboard Redesign Case Study

InsightLoop's original dashboard dumped all available KPIs and filters onto a single screen, reasoning that power users would appreciate everything at once. Usability testing, however, revealed cognitive overload: users missed key signals and felt unsure which metrics mattered for their goals. The company prioritized a redesign to declutter and guide attention.

Designers introduced a hierarchy of information using card groupings, progressive disclosure, and goal-based presets. A ‘My Goals’ module let users pin three priority metrics to the top, while a secondary panel hosted exploratory charts. The team also standardized color semantics and reduced chart types to three preferred visuals, chosen after analyzing user sessions.

Post-launch analytics showed a 35% lift in adoption of the top-priority metrics and a 22% reduction in time to find key insights. NPS for the dashboard grew by five points, and customer success reported fewer basic analytics questions. The redesign also enabled more effective onboarding by focusing tutorials on the new top-of-dashboard workflow.

The experiment highlighted the power of constraint: reducing choices helped users commit to meaningful actions. InsightLoop plans to iterate further by introducing adaptive presets that change based on industry and role.
