Game industry union wins push for standardized junior designer pay scales
Gaming · 3 min read
Union victories in several mid-sized studios resulted in collective agreements that define entry-level wages, minimum raises after set periods, and clearer role definitions for QA, UI, and UX designers. Advocates say this lowers turnover and reduces exploitative unpaid crunch for early-career staff.
While AAA studios are not uniformly covered, the precedent is influencing hiring practices—some non-union studios voluntarily adopt clearer bands to stay competitive. Recruiters note that transparent progression ladders make junior roles easier to recruit for and reduce negotiation time.
For junior designers, the development is a net positive: clearer expectations, faster movement through pay bands, and increased leverage when switching employers. The union movement is also prompting companies to invest in mentorship and formal onboarding to justify higher structured pay.
