Gaming Companies Add UX Research Roles to Early Dev Stages, Boosting Pay for Researchers
Gaming ยท 5 min read
Traditionally, UX research in games focused on post-alpha testing, but studios increasingly hire researchers during concept and prototyping stages. Early-stage research helps teams iterate mechanics and narrative hooks before costly development milestones.
As a result, salaries for mid-level to senior UX researchers in gaming have climbed, with some studios offering parity with product research roles in tech. Researchers with mixed-methods skills and experience in behavioral analytics are in highest demand.
This trend improves game quality and reduces rework, but smaller studios struggle to attract researchers at those salaries. Several indie coalitions now share researcher resources across projects to lower costs while accessing needed expertise.
