Gaming HUD Overhaul: How a Mobile MOBA Reduced Cognitive Load and Improved Retention

Developers of a competitive mobile MOBA observed high early churn and frequent accidental ability activations reported in post-match surveys. Heatmaps showed players' thumbs crowded the lower corners where multiple icons and notifications overlapped. The design team ran rapid prototyping with 30 new players to test reduced complexity HUDs.
The final redesign lowered HUD density by grouping non-essential controls into a context menu, introduced intent-confirmation for ultimate abilities (with a short, skippable tutorial), and visually weighted primary actions using color and size without changing muscle-memory placement. A ‘learning mode’ temporarily hid rare mechanics until players reached competency milestones.
Post-release metrics were positive: day-7 retention rose 11%, accidental activation rate fell 47%, and new-player match win rate increased slightly, signaling better early engagement. The project shows the impact of prioritizing clarity and gradual reveal in competitive game UX.
