Gaming UX: Redesigning Matchmaking for a 5v5 Mobile MOBA — Before and After

The mobile MOBA’s original matchmaking focused solely on MMR parity and latency, which produced balanced teams statistically but often paired players with mismatched expectations (casual vs. competitive) and role preferences. Players reported frustration when they were forced into roles they didn’t want, leading to early leavers and toxic chat. The redesign pursued a softer match alignment: preserve MMR and ping constraints but surface role intent and time-commitment signals before matching.
The new pre-match screen collects two low-effort signals: preferred role and commitment level (casual, standard, competitive). A lightweight timeout penalty and “soft swaps” system reduced role conflicts while a visible pre-match summary showed expected queue time and a quick compatibility score. The UI also introduced micro-affirmations for players who selected supportive roles, nudging social reciprocity.
Post-launch metrics were encouraging: average match abandonment fell by 27%, average session length increased by 12%, and in-game reports of role-related conflicts decreased. The team emphasized that matchmaking is not only about numbers — transparent communication, simple opt-in choices, and thoughtful microcopy helped manage expectations and reduced negative behavior.
