Gmail’s Smart Compose & Nudges: An AI Feature Teardown
AI · 6 min read
Smart Compose subtly suggests completions inline as the user types, which minimizes context switching and preserves the flow state. The suggestions are presented in a light gray inline treatment and can be accepted with Tab or a click, keeping the interaction low-cost. Nudges operate on the other side — they resurface old threads or suggest replies, aiming to reduce inbox entropy without creating additional attention costs.
Designing these features required careful calibration: too aggressive suggestions annoy users; too conservative and the feature appears useless. Gmail's approach of letting users see suggestions but not enforcing them respects user agency. The app also provides controls to toggle and refine behaviors, which is crucial for trust when AI touches a communication channel.
For teams shipping AI productivity features, our teardown recommends: prioritize inline, imperceptible assistance for composition tasks; expose simple controls for frequency and personality; and instrument impact on downstream metrics like time-to-reply and thread resolution, not just engagement with suggestions.
