Google announces Material 4 with generative-aware design tokens
Design · 5 min read
Google’s Material 4 focuses on making design systems generative-aware: new token types capture variability and constraints for AI-driven layouts and color selection. Tokens now support probability-weighted values and semantic constraints so models can propose variations consistent with a brand.
Material 4 also introduces contextual theming that adapts UI color, typography emphasis, and spacing to content attributes like image mood, reading density, and user preference signals. The goal is to let interfaces respond intelligently while keeping brand consistency.
Developers get updated libraries for Jetpack Compose and Flutter, plus tooling in Material Theme Builder to author conditional tokens. Google pitches Material 4 as a bridge between deterministic design systems and flexible, AI-led personalization.
