Google introduces Gemini for UI: multimodal design assistant in Material Theme

Google integrated a specialized Gemini model into Material Theme Builder to help design teams generate components, tokens, and accessible color palettes from natural language or screenshots. Users can describe a desired layout or upload a screenshot and receive a ready-to-use component with accessible contrast suggestions and responsive rules.

The assistant also exports code snippets in Jetpack Compose, Flutter, and web (CSS + JS) and flags accessibility issues like low contrast or missing semantic labels. Designers can iterate on token sets in a guided workflow that suggests naming, scale, and usage patterns aligned to Material conventions.

Google says the feature aims to reduce handoff friction between designers and engineers and to embed accessibility checks earlier in the workflow. The company emphasized that usage telemetry is anonymized and that teams can run the assistant on-premises using Vertex AI for private projects.
