Google launches Android 15L for foldables with adaptive UI components

Google announced Android 15L, a targeted release aimed at foldables, tablets, and large-screen laptops. Alongside performance and battery improvements, the OS introduces an adaptive UI component library that lets apps fluidly reflow content between single-pane and dual-pane modes based on hinge angle and window size.

The runtime includes a layout continuity API that helps developers preserve interaction state when an app transitions between configurations. Google also added heuristics to suggest split-pane layouts to the system shell when an app provides a multi-pane manifest. Designers can preview these behaviors in the updated Layout Inspector in Android Studio.

For designers and product teams, Android 15L reduces fragmentation by offering standardized behaviors for multi-window experiences, but teams must still optimize touch targets and motion patterns for hinge-induced transitions. Google released updated Material You guidance for large-screen affordances and recommended patterns for app resizable content.
