Google launches Material 4 with generative UX components and system tokens

Material 4 expands Google's design system with a new layer of generative UX components that can propose color palettes, layout variations, and micro-interactions based on high-level brand inputs. These components run optionally on-device for privacy and performance.
The release standardizes system tokens across platforms—Android, Web, and Flutter—so designers and engineers share the same source of truth for spacing, typography, and motion. Token overrides can be scoped by device class or region, improving localization and accessibility handling.
Material 4 also includes a component generator CLI and Figma plugin that export production-ready components. Google emphasized compatibility with existing Material implementations and provided migration tools to help teams adopt the new token model.
