Developers using Maps Platform can now overlay AR directions and contextual information tied to indoor positioning systems. The layer supports custom POIs, branded wayfinding, and dynamic crowd-density hints.

Google provides a calibration toolkit to help venues anchor maps to real-world markers and handheld sensors to achieve sub-meter accuracy. For mobile apps, the AR layer consumes fewer resources by selectively rendering route segments near the user.
