Google Maps Routing Teardown: Eco, Safety, and Multi-Modal Choices
Tech · 5 min read
Google Maps now surfaces three main route priorities up front: fastest, greenest, and safest. Each route includes small visual badges and an expandable card that explains the trade-offs — estimated emissions, accident data signals, and sidewalk accessibility cues for walking legs.
Microtransit and scooter legs are woven inline with door-to-door time estimates, not as separate apps. The UI encourages mixed-mode trips with easy toggles and a map preview that highlights transfer points, shelters, and real-time occupancy for transit.
The main UX challenge is cognitive load: too many metrics can overwhelm drivers at glance. Google deals with this via progressive disclosure — only the top metric is shown initially, with optional cards for deeper data. It's a practical example of surfacing societal goals without sacrificing clarity.
