Google Material Design launches dynamic theming 2.0 and Android theme translator

Material Design’s update emphasizes adaptive, cross-platform theming with an expanded token system covering motion, elevation, and interaction states. The new system is designed to be provably consistent across web, Android, and Flutter while allowing brands to express unique identities.

The Theme Translator takes a published token set and outputs platform-specific style sheets, CSS variables, Android style resources, and Flutter theme classes. It also provides a conflict report and suggested token reductions to make large design systems easier to maintain.

Google is encouraging component libraries to adopt the token schema, and the Material team released migration guides and a Figma plugin that lets designers preview the theme across platforms before generating exports for engineering teams.
