Google Material introduces Neuro-Inclusive Motion and Focus Tokens for calmer UIs

The new token set provides normalized values for micro-interactions (duration, easing), focus visibility (outline thickness, contrast), and panel density (padding, element grouping) so designers can tune UIs for users who experience sensory overload or attentional challenges. Tokens are semantic, so 'motion-step' corresponds to meaningful interaction categories rather than raw milliseconds.

Material's docs include pattern recipes for progressive disclosure, simplified navigation, and tempo control for animations. The team also published accessibility test scripts and user-research notes gathered from neurodiverse participants, explaining why options like slightly longer animation duration or paused hover effects can reduce cognitive load.

Design systems teams can adopt these tokens to offer accessible presets and let end users choose a mode globally or per-app. Google recommends tying the tokens to OS-level preferences and to make switching persistent and discoverable as part of onboarding and settings.
