Google Photos adds Magic Canvas: generative background replacement with depth-aware masks

Magic Canvas combines image segmentation with generative background synthesis, enabling users to place subjects in new scenes without visible artifacts. Google said the tool uses depth estimation to maintain accurate occlusion and lighting continuity for better realism.
The feature supports batch processing for albums and includes style presets tailored for travel, portrait and editorial looks. For pro users, Google provides manual controls to refine masks, match color grading, and tweak lighting for composited backgrounds.
Privacy and authenticity features include an embedded provenance tag that records when an image was generated or modified. Photographers appreciated the improvements but recommended careful curation to avoid overuse of synthetic backgrounds in documentary contexts.
