Google Play adds AI transparency badges and monetization guidance
AI · 4 min read
Google Play announced a new badge system that flags apps using generative AI for media, text, or recommendations. Badges link to a short disclosure page explaining what sorts of content is generated, whether the model runs on-device, and basic safety precautions.
In parallel, Google updated monetization guidance for AI-powered features, clarifying acceptable billing models, refund policies for generated content, and developer obligations around data retention and user consent. Apps monetizing AI services must provide clear pricing and a sample of generated output at purchase point.
Developers will be given a transition window to add disclosures and align pricing models. Google frames this as an effort to increase buyer confidence while keeping the Play Store’s ecosystem sustainable for creators and studios.
