Google Play strengthens privacy labels and runtime tracker permissions for apps

The Play Store announcement demands expanded privacy disclosures that include third-party tracker behavior, data retention windows, and algorithmic profiling purposes. Developers will need to map trackers to specific data types and provide sample data flows in submissions.

Google also introduced runtime tracker permissions, prompting users when an app attempts to engage profiling or cross-app tracking behaviors. The new prompts include a concise explanation and options to allow limited profiling for personalization purposes.

To ease transitions, Google provided auditing tools in the Play Console that scan APKs and app bundles for known tracker signatures and suggest remediations. Enforcement will begin with warnings followed by stricter measures later in the year, emphasizing transparency and user control.
