Google previews Material Next tokens and deep Figma integration for design systems

Material Next centers on design tokens that adapt to device, user preferences and contextual signals—think color ramps that react to ambient conditions and typography that scales based on viewing distance. The system ships with an official token schema and a migration guide for existing Material-based projects.

Crucially for design teams, Google partnered with Figma to add live token syncing: updates made in Figma’s token panel can now push to Material libraries, and Android Studio can consume them through a new tokens-to-code exporter. Google says this reduces duplication and keeps product teams aligned across design and engineering.

Google also showcased updated accessibility defaults and motion guidelines in Material Next, targeting more consistent cross-platform behavior. The preview SDK is available for early adopters with sample apps and a compatibility checker.
