Google Unveils Android 16.2 With Material Revamp for Foldables and Windowing APIs

Android 16.2 introduces Material Foundation refinements optimized for large and foldable screens: updated responsive tokens, adaptive component behaviors, and new split-effective components that adapt their content density automatically across seam areas.

More importantly for developers, Android now exposes a standardized windowing API that reports hinge geometry, seamless surface continuity, and layout transitions. The API helps apps smoothly reflow content and animate layout changes when users fold or unfold devices.

Google also updated the suite of interoperability guidelines and provided Jetpack libraries that wrap the new windowing primitives. UX teams are encouraged to test continuity scenarios early, and the Android Studio emulator now simulates realistic hinge physics and multi-window states.
