Google unveils Gemini Canvas: generative UI flows integrated into Material Design
Tech · 6 min read
Gemini Canvas extends Google's Gemini family into the design space, offering a tool that can generate multi-screen flows, state transitions, and component libraries that adhere to Material Design guidelines. The tool ingests user stories, analytics snippets, or wireframes and outputs interactive prototypes with recommended accessibility tweaks and motion presets.
Canvas also integrates with Firebase to simulate data-driven UIs, allowing designers to preview lists, pagination, and error states with realistic data. Google showcased a demo where a short brief produced a sign-up flow complete with validation copy and responsive behaviors, which developers could export as Material components and sample code.
The company highlighted enterprise features such as team-approved component packs and usage analytics for generated screens. While Google encourages designers to treat outputs as starting points, the tool's tight coupling with Material assets could accelerate shipping consistent product experiences across Android and the web.
