Google unveils 'Gemini Nano' family for edge-friendly multimodal tasks

The Gemini Nano family provides scaled-down multimodal models optimized for on-device latency and battery efficiency. Google emphasizes privacy-by-default, with on-device processing that avoids server round-trips for sensitive imagery and UI screenshots.

Gemini Nano ships with developer libraries for Android and iOS and includes pre-built connectors for popular design apps to enable local auto-labeling, composition suggestions, and offline alt-text generation. The SDK supports quantized models and hardware accelerators present on modern phones.

While not matching cloud-scale models in raw capability, Gemini Nano aims to bring familiar multimodal tasks into offline workflows where designers need immediate feedback and enterprises need to keep data in-house. Google also announced partnerships with OEMs to pre-bundle certain Nano capabilities into device toolchains.
