Google's Vertex Design API brings on-device vector export for generative models
Tech · 3 min read
At I/O+, Google announced Vertex Design API, a managed endpoint that streams vector-first outputs—SVGs with grouped layers, editable gradients, and component annotations—so generated assets can be dropped straight into design systems. The API supports style-preserving mode to align outputs with a given brand guide.
Crucially for designers, the API can run a lightweight model on-device for previewing edits before committing to cloud processing, improving privacy and responsiveness for mobile prototyping. Google emphasized compatibility with Figma, Sketch, and popular front-end frameworks by exporting component props and accessibility metadata.
Early partners include a major CMS provider and a design ops platform using the API to auto-generate hero sections and email templates. Google is also releasing sample prompts and a dataset of paired prompts and vector outputs to help teams build reliable generation patterns.
