How Blinkly Cut Cart Abandonment 28% with a One-Button Checkout Redesign
Design · 5 min read
Blinkly's analytics showed a steady 18–32% cart abandonment rate concentrated at the payment and confirmation screens. Heatmaps and session replays revealed friction points: small primary CTA, hidden promo input, and a modal that interrupted the mobile keyboard. Designers hypothesized that reducing cognitive load and keeping users in a single flow would improve completion rates.
The team prototyped a one-button checkout that consolidated payment selection, promo application, and final confirmation behind progressive disclosure. On mobile the persistent bottom CTA surfaced the primary action and opened an inline overlay for optional settings instead of navigating away. We prioritized accessibility by making the overlay keyboard-navigable and exposing clear microcopy for promo terms and refunds.
A two-week A/B test with 12,400 sessions produced a 28% reduction in abandonment and a 9% increase in average order value, partly due to clearer promo placement. The rollout used feature flags to ramp users by geographic cohort and included server-side logging of each micro-interaction for quick rollback. The biggest tradeoff was complexity for support: customer service scripts were updated and a short in-app walkthrough eased the transition for repeat buyers.
