HUD Redesign Case Study: Reducing Cognitive Load in a Competitive FPS Alpha

RoguePulse, an indie FPS studio, received player feedback that the heads-up display was cluttered and obscured sightlines during firefights. The initial HUD attempted to surface every metric simultaneously: ammo, reload timers, map, teammate statuses, and multiple passive indicators. The UX approach centered on hierarchy — which information truly needed constant visibility versus what could be contextual or transient.
Designers prototyped three HUD variants and ran closed alpha cohorts with telemetry capturing focus heatmaps, engagement with pop-up elements, and combat performance. The chosen redesign minimized persistent elements, moved noncritical info to ephemeral overlays that appeared on demand, and introduced auditory cues for low-ammo and objective changes. Accessibility options included scalable HUD, high-contrast modes, and configurable positions for all elements.
After rollout to the wider alpha, players reported lower perceived cognitive load and a 12% improvement in combat decision latency as measured by time from threat detection to response. Match satisfaction scores rose and retention over the first three sessions improved, validating the principle that less is often more in fast-paced game UIs.
