HUD Redesign Case Study: Reducing Cognitive Load in ArenaX

ArenaX's in-match HUD originally displayed extensive telemetry — mini-map, killfeed, weapon stats, cooldown timers, social prompts — all simultaneously. Playtesting and telemetry showed that players experienced spikes in input latency and more frequent mis-clicks during high-intensity fights, especially in players below the 40th percentile.
The design team experimented with context-aware HUD layering: non-critical elements fade dynamically during combat, while a compact, high-contrast overlay surfaces only the most relevant information (health, active cooldowns, current weapon). They also moved persistent social and store prompts out of the playfield into a post-match hub.
After iteration, ArenaX reported a 14% reduction in deaths attributable to UI distraction during fights for lower-skill cohorts, and a smoother perceived pace reported in qualitative debriefs. Importantly, competitive players could still opt into a denser HUD via a preset, preserving customization.
For game designers: dynamic, context-aware UI that adapts to gameplay intensity can reduce cognitive load without taking away player agency. The balance is offering curated defaults for most players and deep customization for power users.
