IBM updates Carbon with neurodiversity tokens and motion control primitives

IBM announced today an update to Carbon that introduces a new set of neurodiversity tokens and motion-control primitives designed to help teams tailor sensory experiences for users with attention and sensory-processing differences. Tokens include 'sensory-density', 'transition-intent', and 'focus-sustain' which map to component behavior rather than just visual styles.

Developers can now bind these tokens to runtime flags (for example, user preference for reduced sensory load), enabling components to dynamically simplify motion, reduce auto-play intervals, and limit simultaneous visual changes. Carbon also added a library of accessible micro-interactions with documented cognitive load impact scores derived from user testing.

The update includes contributions from neurodivergent designers and accessibility researchers and comes with an implementation guide to help teams migrate existing components. IBM says the goal is to make neurodiversity-friendly defaults the norm, lowering the burden on product teams to retrofit inclusive experiences.
