Inclusive component libraries: how a global fintech built accessibility into their system from day one

The fintech — called Meridian Payments for this case study — launched with markets spanning Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Early research revealed users with low literacy, older adults with vision decline, and intermittent connectivity. Instead of retrofitting accessibility, Meridian created a component taxonomy with required accessibility props, contrast-first palettes, and offline-first patterns.
Designers defined mandatory token groups for localizability and numeric formatting, while engineers implemented components with clear ARIA semantics and robust keyboard-first interaction models. Storybook stories included language toggles and simulated low-bandwidth scenarios so product teams could see real trade-offs. Accessibility acceptance criteria were part of the definition of done for each component.
The cost upfront was modest compared to later remediation: Meridian avoided lengthy legal reviews and reduced customer support calls related to login friction and transaction errors. Other regulated verticals, like health and insurance, are now studying the playbook — the lesson being that inclusive design systems reduce operational risk and improve adoption in diverse markets.
