Instagram Reels: A UX Teardown of Short-Form Discovery

This teardown examines Instagram's Reels surface across Home, Explore, and profile pages. We map the tap paths, microcopy, and affordances that pull users from passive scrolling into creator follows and saves, showing where friction still loses creators in the growth funnel.

Design choices like auto-play, looped clips, and prominent follow CTAs are balanced against cognitive load from multi-layered overlays. We analyze how algorithmic ranking signals are surfaced indirectly through UI elements like the audio card, remix buttons, and duet affordances, and how those signals affect creator behavior.

Finally, the case study outlines incremental experiments Instagram could run to improve creator monetization visibility and surface more niche content, including measured A/B test proposals and metrics to track creator lifetime value and content diversity.
