iOS 18.3 refines spatial audio settings and introduces Spatial Profiles API

With iOS 18.3 Apple introduced a new Spatial Profiles API that lets media apps read device-level head-related transfer function (HRTF) parameters and recommend tuning presets for their audio pipelines. The aim is to make spatial mixes sound more consistent across AirPods, Vision Pro, and third-party certified devices.

System-wide spatial audio settings now include per-app fallback controls and a “consistency” toggle that favors exact spatial positioning over individualized HRTF corrections. Apple says these changes are based on combined telemetry and lab listening sessions to reduce severe differences in perceived width and elevation between devices.

For designers and audio engineers, Apple published sample mixes and UX guidelines showing when to expose user-level spatial controls versus keeping things automatic. The update also brings minor latency improvements for multi-device sync when streaming live spatial audio.
