iOS 20.1 beta introduces Live Widgets and Mac Continuity Toolkit

The iOS 20.1 developer beta, released this week, adds Live Widgets — widgets that permit limited interactivity without opening an app. Live Widgets support inline controls like toggles, progress scrubbing, and contextual mini-views, enabling designers to prototype glanceable, actionable experiences.
Complementing widgets, Apple introduced a Continuity Toolkit for developers building cross-device experiences. The toolkit standardizes shared state, drag-and-drop semantics, and responsive layouts so iPhone apps can more fluidly convert to native Mac windows with minimal code changes.
Apple also updated Human Interface Guidelines with new patterns for Live Widgets and Continuity layouts. Designers are already experimenting with widget-first flows for messaging, task management, and creative tools, but some caution that discoverability and battery impact will be key adoption factors.
