iOS 20.3 Adds Live Interface Tools for Interactive Widgets

Apple's iOS 20.3 developer update introduces Live Interface Tools, a new API set that lets widgets maintain richer state, accept more complex gestures, and provide haptic and subtle audio feedback without opening the host app. The goal is to let designers create glanceable, interactive experiences like mini-forms, toggles with confirmations, and media controls that feel native to the home screen.

The toolkit includes lifecycle hooks to reduce background work, new snapshot APIs to keep widgets visually accurate, and strict power budgets to manage battery impact. Apple also added new accessibility affordances for VoiceOver and switch control in widget contexts, addressing a frequent developer request.

Designers will appreciate the added typography and layout presets that match system controls, while engineers get diagnostics in Xcode to profile widget updates. Apple emphasized that the APIs are intentionally conservative to protect privacy and battery life, but they expect this to be a major shift in how apps offer glanceable interactivity.
