iOS 20.4 brings adaptive Home widgets and dynamic display scaling for older devices

The iOS 20.4 developer beta introduces adaptive Home widgets that can reflow their layout based on context, like user activity, time of day, and battery state. Widgets expose new APIs allowing designers to supply compact, regular, and expanded variants that the system can switch between seamlessly.
A notable addition is dynamic display scaling, a software layer that mimics ProMotion-like frame smoothing on non-ProMotion iPhones by intelligently interpolating animations and reducing frame drops. Apple says this feature aims to extend perceived fluidity without dramatically increasing power draw.
Apple also expanded widget privacy controls and background refresh permissions, giving users clearer choices about when widget data may be fetched. Designers and developers should expect additional tweaks before the public release later this year.
