LinkedIn Feed Algorithm Teardown: UX Strategies for Professional Relevance
Design · 6 min read
LinkedIn serves multiple masters: network updates, thought leadership, hiring signals, and learning content. Its feed algorithm balances these but offers limited user control to prioritize or demote categories, leading to feed fatigue. The current 'Sort by' and 'Unfollow' actions are blunt instruments.
A more nuanced approach would let users apply 'shelf' settings — temporary feed modes like 'Job Search,' 'Skill Growth,' or 'Networking' — which tune ranking weights and surface appropriate content types. Additionally, introducing micro-controls at the post level (e.g., 'more posts like this,' 'less promotional content') with immediate visible effect would increase user agency.
We also recommend transparent explanations when the algorithm prioritizes a post (e.g., 'based on your recent engagement with X'), and an analytics card summarizing how the user's actions shifted feed composition. These design changes would help professionals tailor LinkedIn to their current objectives.
