LinkedIn Feed Consolidation: Stories to Feed — A Product Postmortem

LinkedIn's pivot away from Stories reflected low sustained engagement and mismatched user intent; the platform's professional context favors persistent signals over ephemeral posts. Designers consolidated ephemeral posts into a new 'Highlights' feed section that surfaces short updates alongside curated professional content. The feed uses prominence cues to differentiate updates from longer-form posts.

To preserve real-time feel, LinkedIn implemented lightweight composer templates for quick career updates and an 'event highlight' slot for conference takeaways. Moderation and discoverability were carefully calibrated to prevent feed clutter. The design includes micro-moments—inline endorsement prompts and badge callouts—that help translate ephemeral signals into lasting professional context.

The consolidation increased meaningful interactions and reduced redundancy. For product designers, LinkedIn's experience shows the importance of mapping content formats to user goals: ephemeral formats work when aligned with casual consumption, but professional networks often require persistence and traceability.
