LinkedIn Feed Relevance Teardown: Signals, Reciprocity, and Professional Identity

LinkedIn updated its feed ranking to weigh reciprocal engagement — endorsements, mutual comments, and collaborative signals — more heavily, aiming to promote professional interactions over viral sensationalism. The feed UI highlights 'mutual engagement' as a tag on posts and surfaces micro-tasks like 'Offer a resource' or 'Request an intro' to nudge productive actions. These cues help maintain professional identity on the platform.

The recommendation cards include context buttons showing which of the user's connections interacted with a post and why it might be relevant to a user's role or industry. To reduce noise, LinkedIn also introduced a lightweight 'professional focus' toggle that filters posts by intent (hiring, mentoring, learning). The UX deliberately frames these filters as identity-preserving rather than exclusionary.

For designers, LinkedIn's approach illustrates how aligning feed mechanics with user intent can reshape platform behavior. Transparency and small actionable tools (e.g., one-click resource shares) reduced passive consumption and increased purposeful engagement during trials.
