LumenAI Raises $120M Series B to Mass-Produce Edge Multimodal ASIC

LumenAI announced a $120 million Series B led by Northbridge Partners, with participation from existing investors and strategic hardware firms. The round is earmarked to accelerate fabrication and bring the startup's first edge multimodal ASIC into mass production by Q2 2027.

The company’s chip, unveiled in prototype form earlier this year, combines efficient transformers for language with specialized vision accelerators and a low-power digital signal chain for wake-word and audio processing. LumenAI claims the silicon will enable sub-50ms end-to-end inference on complex audio-visual tasks while staying within smartphone-class thermal budgets.

LumenAI says the funds will also expand customer engineering teams to embed the ASIC into AR headsets, smart glasses, and in-vehicle systems. For designers, the pitch is familiar: local processing reduces latency and privacy exposure, but raises new integration and UX trade-offs for multimodal fallbacks and model updates.
