macOS 14.4 Update Adds GPU-Aware Window Scaling for Pro Apps
Tech · 3 min read
The macOS 14.4 point release includes a developer-facing API that enables apps to offload window scaling to discrete GPUs where available. The move targets creative and pro apps that frequently resize large canvases, such as video editors and digital painting tools.
Apple says this results in smoother interactive zooming and more faithful rendering of vector and pixel content, since the scaling can be performed in higher-precision color spaces on compatible hardware. The feature requires apps to opt in and exposes toggles to prefer either power efficiency or maximum visual fidelity.
Early adopters among graphics and DAW developers reported noticeable improvements, particularly on MacBook Pros with discrete GPUs. Apple also updated Xcode templates and the Metal Performance Shaders docs with guidance on testing and fallbacks for integrated GPUs.
