macOS introduces adaptive window layouts for multitasking with Stage Manager 2.0

Stage Manager 2.0 brings adaptive window layouts that learn common groupings of apps and suggest saved workspaces based on time of day or active project. The system analyzes which windows users commonly open together and offers one-tap restore points that keep window positions, sizes, and even minimized notes intact.

Apple added new keyboard-driven layout snapping and a refined Spaces integration so creators can fluidly move between projects without rebuilding layouts. For power users, Stage Manager includes a compact mode that prioritizes visible content area while retaining quick access to grouped apps.

Developers gain a new Layout Suggestions API that allows apps to expose semantic hints about their preferred workspace — for example, an IDE indicating it works best with a terminal and a preview pane. Apple stresses that the telemetry used to suggest layouts is processed locally and can be disabled.

Design teams testing the beta report faster setup for recurring tasks like mockup review and design critiques. The update aims to reduce friction for multi-app workflows and bring macOS windowing closer to modern design practices.
