macOS Sequoia brings systemwide generative image tools and asset-aware search
AI · 5 min read
macOS Sequoia introduces systemwide generative image capabilities embedded in Preview and Notes, allowing users to extend, replace or stylize images without opening a separate creative app. The functionality exposes simple prompts and sliders — such as style, lighting and subject focus — and produces multiple iterations that can be dragged back into documents.
Finder now includes asset-aware search powered by on-device vision models: users can query across images, PDFs and screenshots with natural language, filter by detected subjects, and preview generative edit suggestions inline. Apple emphasizes privacy, noting that image analysis and generation are handled locally on supported hardware, with offloading to secure system processes when needed.
For UX teams, the new features mean lower friction for prototyping and documenting visual ideas directly in documentation. Apple also released developer hooks to surface alternative generated renditions in apps and to mark assets as "protected" to opt them out of generative pipelines.
