Players reported abandoning matches during the wait because the pre-match screen felt empty and offered no meaningful actions. The original flow showed a rotating tip carousel and a static countdown; the game’s analytics showed a 28% dropout rate during the 30–60 second waits. The studio needed solutions that wouldn’t impact match balancing or latency.
The redesign introduced meaningful micro-interactions during queueing: a persistent invite widget for friends, opt-in short mini-challenges that trained players on map elements, and live queue transparency that explained why waits happened and estimated remaining time. Designers tested three prototypes: a social-first layout, a micro-challenge-first layout, and a hybrid. The hybrid performed best in playtests.
After shipping, dropouts during queueing fell by 19% and median session length rose 11%. Players reported higher perceived fairness and less boredom pre-match. The studio’s constraint-driven approach — low impact on core matchmaking systems, incremental UX additions, and fast A/B tests — demonstrated effective design under production constraints.
