Material Design 4 Introduces 'Polylib' for Multiscript Typography and Inclusive Localization

Material Design 4 centers on global inclusivity with Polylib, a library that manages typographic families, fallback stacks, numeral shaping, and bidirectional layout heuristics across locales. Designers can now attach locale-aware tokens to components — for example, different token values for line-height or truncation rules depending on script or reading-direction.
Polylib also exposes cultural heuristics for components that commonly vary by region (date/time pickers, form defaults, validation messaging), and it integrates with Material's accessibility checker to verify localized content still meets contrast and focus order requirements. The goal is to reduce the 'one-size-fits-all' pitfalls that force teams to bolt on accessibility fixes late in localization.
Google is releasing Polylib as an open-source module with Figma plugins, CSS token formats, and a set of recommended fallbacks for older platforms. The Material team emphasized that inclusive localization is not only language translation but also layout logic, typographic tuning, and respectful defaults for diverse user groups.
