Material Design updates introduce motion system and cross-platform tokens
Design · 4 min read
The new Material update centers on a unified motion system that prescribes timing, easing, and choreography patterns for common interactions like navigation, transitions, and responsive layout changes. Google's guidelines include a new motion playground and exported timing curves so teams can sync behavior across web, Android, and Flutter implementations.
Material's token set was expanded to cover elevation semantics, interactive states, and density variants, and Google added exporters that generate tokens for CSS, Compose, and SwiftUI. The intention is to reduce friction for cross-platform teams implementing Material-based products while ensuring consistent behavior.
Designers get updated Figma and Sketch kits, plus a converter that maps legacy Material components to the new token system. Google also announced a certification program for component libraries that comply with the updated motion and accessibility requirements.
